After trailing by as many as 13 points in the second quarter, Avon’s girls basketball team battled back to make a game of it Friday against visiting Berea-Midpark, eventually dropping a 61-53 decision. The Eagles are now 6-13 overall and 5-7 in Southwestern Conference play. They have lost five of their last six games, with the losses coming to teams with a combined record of 65-21.

Berea-Midpark, which is tied atop the SWC standings with Olmsted Falls and Avon Lake, held a nine-point lead at halftime, 32-23. Avon twice got to within a single point in the third period, once at 36-35 after a layup by Alaina Pagan, and again at 38-37 after two free throws by Audrey Lammers. However, each time the 15-3 Titans answered.

Pagan got the Eagles back to within two points, 50-48, with just over 4 minutes to play in the game, but, again, Berea-Midpark answered with a 3-pointer and gradually pulled away.

Ava Mitchell topped Avon with 12 points, while Chloe Collins added nine. Lammers and Pagan each chipped in with eight points, with seven of Pagan’s coming in the second half.

The Eagles hope to get back to their winning ways on Wednesday when they host SWC foe Midview. In their first meeting of the season, Avon downed the Middies, 49-38.
