Girls soccer plays to a 1-1 tie against defending state champions

In a rematch of last year’s Division II regional final, host Avon and defending state champion Whitehouse Anthony Wayne played to a 1-1 tie Saturday in non-conference girls soccer action.
It was the third time the teams have played in the last two years, and it’s very possible that there could be a fourth meeting later this season in the postseason tournament. Last year, the Generals defeated the Eagles, 3-0 during the regular season and 3-2 in overtime in the regional final.
Anthony Wayne, 4-1-2, scored first when there appeared to be some miscommunication within the Avon defense, and Kiera Rouser’s goal held up until early in the second half. Ashlyn Hider scored the equalizer for the 4-2-1 Eagles. Sienna Stuckart sent a crossing pass toward the Anthony Wayne goal, and the ball was headed by a defender right to Hider, who easily found the back of the nets.
Avon, unbeaten in its last five matches after opening with two losses, next travels to Berea-Midpark on Wednesday. The Titans are 2-0 in conference play and 5-1-1 overall.
