Eagles win all their matches on first day of sectional tennis tournament
Avon’s girls tennis team had a successful day Monday in the opening matches of the Division I sectional tournament at Medina Highland. The Eagles have three singles players and two doubles teams entered in the event, and all are still alive entering Tuesday’s second day of play.
The top-seeded team in doubles, Sam Jackson and Grace Gedeon blanked their opponents from Normandy, 6-0, 6-0, and next will face Charlaice McDonald and Lila Maurer of Lakewood. Avon’s other doubles team of Samantha Gault and Karina Marsden also swept their way into the next round, taking down Jessica Hajek and Aliyah Yusko of Strongsville, 6-2, 6-2. Next in the bracket is Lily Jones and Gianna Colonna of Berea-Midpark.
In singles, senior Ashley DeHaven is the second seed, and she gave up just one game to Anisha Kokitkar of Strongsville, 6-1, 6-0, to on move to the next round against Mara Cujdeanu of St. Joseph Academy. Isabella Gentile blanked her opponent from North Ridgeville, 6-0, 6-0 and next faces Madi Milota of Olmsted Falls, and Nora Fiest advanced with a 6-0, 6-1 victory to set up a match with fourth-seeded Ana Morgan of Padua.
All are playing for a top-four finish, which would earn a berth in the district tournament next week at Springside Athletic Club in Akron. The final day of matches in the sectional will be held Thursday at Magnificat.
