Three Avon tennis players advance to district tournament
Avon will be sending three representatives to the Division I district tennis tournament this coming week at Springside Athletic Club in Akron. Sophomores Aarav Kishorepuria and Blake Netschke placed second in the doubles bracket, while junior Ashton Schwanger was fourth in singles.
Kishorepuria and Netschke played first and second singles for the Eagles all season, but they chose to combine their talents for the postseason tournament. Seeded second, the pair defeated No. 3 Simon Youssef and Jongeun Choi of Brecksville-Broadview Heights, 7-5, 6-2 in their semifinal match Saturday at Springside before falling to the top seeded pair of Enrique Isaev and Jerrel Ryan of North Royalton, 6-3, 6-0 in the final.
Schwanger was the lone Avon representative in the singles bracket and became the only unseeded player to advance from Springside to the district tournament. He lost in the semifinals to eventual champion Finn Keenan of Revere, who didn’t drop a game in any of his five matches. Keenan was the top seed and placed third in the state last year. Schwanger then lost to John Komlanc of Copley in the third-place match, 6-2, 6-1.
The district tournament will be held on Thursday and Saturday at Springside. The top six finishers in both singles and doubles will advance to the state tournament the following week in Mason.
