Cole Veverka scored two first-half goals and goalkeeper Owen Huron and his defense made it hold up Monday as Avon defeated visiting Mentor in non-conference boys soccer action, 2-0.

Both of Veverka’s goals came off headers on corner kicks, first from Connor Britt in the 12th minute, and then from London Carnie in the 30th minute. They were the first two goals of the season for the junior defender.

The shutout was the third of the season for Huron, who has successfully moved up from being Avon’s junior varsity goalie last year.

Next on the schedule for the 4-1-1 Eagles is a trip to Midview on Wednesday for a Southwestern Conference match.
