Vincent Palumbo scores twice as Eagles clinch another SWC crown
Vincent Palumbo provided all the scoring for visiting Avon Thursday as the Eagles took a 2-1 decision over Olmsted Falls to clinch their second consecutive Southwestern Conference championship.
Palumbo, a senior defender, scored both goals on assists from Connor Britt. Palumbo gave Avon a 1-0 lead about 15 minutes into the match on a corner kick from Britt, only to have the Bulldogs battle back to tie the score at 1-1. The same two combined for the only score of the second half, as Palumbo scored the clinching goal with about 24 minutes to play.
With the victory, the Eagles end the regular season with a record of 12-1-3 overall and 7-0 in SWC action. Avon, which has gone 11-0-2 since a loss to St. Ignatius on August 24, has been named the second seed in the Division II district tournament. However, the release of the brackets has been held up by a court case in the Columbus area, so the Eagles don’t yet know who their first postseason opponent will be.
