With three champions, Eagles place third in SWC wrestling
Despite not entering anybody in the first four weight classes, Avon’s wrestling team still had a strong showing Saturday in the Southwestern Conference championships at Midview High School, placing third behind Avon Lake and Elyria.
The Shoremen totaled 228 points to take their fourth consecutive SWC crown by nearly 100 points over Elyria (131½). Avon was next with 122½, followed by Olmsted Falls (112½), Berea-Midpark (97), North Ridgeville (85½), Amherst (82½) and Midview (61).
The Eagles had three individual champions: Tony Mrosko at 144 pounds, Eian Englehart at 215 and Derek Weitzel at 285. It was the third SWC title for Englehart, who pinned his way through the bracket, and the second for Mrosko, who won two years ago and missed last year due to injury.
The final at 144 was one of the banner matches of the tournament, as Mrosko took on Blake Cancel of Elyria. According to the website borofanohio.net, Cancel was ranked ninth in the state in Division I and Mrosko was ranked 11th. However, Avon’s senior left little doubt who was the better wrestler on this day, taking a 10-2 major decision. Mrosko won by pin in the first round and then defeated Abe Gill of Avon Lake, 5-0, to reach the final.
As he has done for much of his career, Englehart pinned his way to the title. The senior took down Calleb Scheffler of Olmsted Falls in just 49 seconds in the opening round, then pinned Xaiden Natal of Elyria in 2 minutes, 34 seconds. In the final, Englehart pinned Pablo Secin of Avon Lake in 3:22.
Weitzel moved into the starting lineup when Englehart dropped a weight class, and the sophomore certainly took advantage of the opportunity. In the final, he defeated Nathaniel Scheffler of Olmsted Falls, 3-0. In his first match, Weitzel pinned Javiaun Bush of Amherst in 2:35.
The Eagles also got a second-place finish from Jack Schumacher at 165, third places from Kane Sparks (150) and Evan Branham (190) and a fourth-place finish from Sebastian Vidalon.
Schumacher won his first two matches by pin and by decision before being pinned in the final by Luke Peace of Avon Lake in 1:07. Sparks won his third-place match with a 12-1 major decision over Jon Florczyk of North Ridgeville, and Branham took third by virtue of a pin at 1:56 over Mateo Rodrigues of Midview.
