Young strikes out 13 to lead Avon softball past North Ridgeville

Joe Magill | Avon High School | Apr 3, 2026

Maria Young tossed a complete game shutout with 13 strikeouts Thursday to lead host Avon to a 1-0 victory over defending Southwestern Conference champion North Ridgeville. The Eagles are now 2-0 and host Painesville Riverside on Saturday.

Jenna Smith knocked in the only run Young would need in the first inning, and then the sophomore pitcher never gave the Rangers the chance to even things up, allowing just two hits. The defense behind her also was outstanding, as Avon didn’t commit an error for the second consecutive game.

Jordyn Smith had two hits for Avon, and Jocelin Ochs had a stolen base and scored the game’s only run.
