Young tosses no-hitter as Eagles upset top-ranked Anthony Wayne
Maria Young pitched a no-hitter and Jocelin Ochs cracked a home run Saturday as Avon upset the No. 1 team in the state, taking down host Anthony Wayne, 4-1.
It was the final regular season game for the Eagles, who are now 12-13. The Generals, who were top-ranked in Division II according to the last state coaches poll, fell to 23-3.
Young, a sophomore, issued three walks while striking out 15. She allowed Anthony Wayne to score a run in the bottom of the fifth inning but then held on for the complete-game victory.
Avon scored a single run in the top of the first inning and then exploded for three runs in the seventh. Three Avon players had hits in a game that was dominated by outstanding pitching: Ochs, Michaela Jankowski and Jordan Aysh. It was the fourth home run of the season for Ochs, who also scored a run and had an RBI. Aysh knocked in two runs, and Jankowski had an RBI on a successful squeeze play.
The Eagles now turn to the postseason tournament where they are seeded eighth. They host No. 22 Nordonia on Tuesday in a district semifinal. If victorious, Avon would face the winner between No. 18 St. Joseph Academy and No. 10 Mayfield in a district final Saturday at Waddell Park in Niles.
