Bay Girls Lacrosse opens Spring Break trip with 16-8 win over No. 6 Wando
Bay Girls Lacrosse opened its spring break trip to Charleston with an impressive 16-8 victory Tuesday over Wando, the No. 6-ranked team in South Carolina, after erasing an early two-goal deficit and taking control from the end of the first quarter on.
The Rockets fell behind 3-1 early, but settled in quickly and closed the opening quarter on a push that evened the score at 3-3. That response proved to be the turning point. From there, Bay outscored Wando 13-5 over the final three quarters, turning a difficult start into a convincing road win in the first game of the team’s spring break trip.
Jill Tennant led the Bay attack with four goals and one assist, while Layla Meaux added three goals and two assists. Gracie Fitchpatrick finished with two goals and one assist, and both Nolie Piktel and Hadley Clark scored twice. Kate Fitchpatrick and Clover Pierce each added a goal, and Lydia Lin contributed an assist as the Rockets spread production throughout the lineup.
Bay’s balanced scoring was the difference as the offense continued to find openings after the first-quarter rally. The Rockets generated enough possession and finishing chances to keep pressure on Wando, and the steady production from multiple scorers prevented the home side from regaining momentum once Bay moved in front.
The win stood out not only because of the final margin, but because of the opponent. Wando entered as one of South Carolina’s top programs, giving Bay an early measuring-stick game away from home. Instead of fading after the 3-1 start, the Rockets matched the moment, tied the game by the end of the first quarter and then dictated the rest of the afternoon.
Bay continues its spring break slate in Charleston with another road test Thursday at Philip Simmons.
