Buckeye blanks Bay 4-0 behind Lilly Young’s 15-strikeout shutout
Buckeye rode a dominant outing from Lilly Young to a 4-0 win over Bay on Tuesday at Buckeye High School to improve to 8-1 (3-0), with the decisive turn coming when the Bucks broke through in the third inning and then let their ace finish the rest. Young struck out 15, allowed just three hits and did not give up a run across seven innings as Buckeye secured the shutout at the Varsity Softball Field.
The Bucks opened the scoring in the third after Juliana Melillo singled home a run, giving Buckeye the lead for good. From there, Young kept Bay from building any momentum, mixing swings and misses with steady control despite issuing two walks. Bay starter Aponte went six innings and struck out six, but Buckeye did enough offensively to create separation, scoring four runs, three of them earned.
Buckeye finished with six hits, getting one apiece from Melillo, Maddie Wilhelm, Ryenne Ford, Ava Piovarchy, and two from Kelsey Morano who turned in one of the team’s strongest individual lines, going 2 for 2 with a run scored according to the team notes, while Melillo reached twice, finishing 1 for 2 with a walk and a stolen base. Eleanor Shaw and Ford provided run production in the lineup, with each driving in a run as Buckeye capitalized on its chances.
The defense matched the work in the circle. Buckeye did not commit an error, an important detail in a game where clean innings helped preserve the shutout. Eleanor Shaw handled a team-high 16 chances in the field, helping anchor a defense that consistently converted balls in play and kept Bay from extending innings.
Young’s performance set the tone from the start and never let Bay settle in. Her 15 strikeouts accounted for the bulk of the outs in the game, and the combination of power pitching, timely hitting and error-free defense gave Buckeye control throughout the afternoon. The Bucks next travel to Lakewood for a Thursday matchup.
