Buckeye Varsity Bucks left Ripken Experience Complex with a statement win Tuesday night, beating Notre Dame Academy 2-0 behind a dominant complete-game no-hitter from Lilly Young. The decisive stretch came in the final three innings, when Buckeye finally broke through in the fifth and added an insurance run in the sixth while Young kept the Varsity Eagles off the bases all game.

Young was overpowering from the first inning through the seventh. The Buckeye right-hander threw all 7.0 innings, allowed no hits and no runs, walked none and piled up 15 strikeouts. It was the kind of outing that gave the Bucks confidence all night, especially in a game where offense was hard to come by on both sides. Buckeye finished with just one hit, but Young’s control and swing-and-miss stuff never gave Notre Dame a chance to build momentum.

The breakthrough arrived in the fifth inning. After four scoreless frames, Eleanor Shaw delivered the game’s first run with a sacrifice fly, putting Buckeye in front 1-0. That small opening mattered in a pitchers’ duel, and the Bucks made it stand up. In the sixth, Faith Shaw helped create another key moment, scoring to push the lead to 2-0. Faith Shaw also supplied Buckeye’s lone hit and added a stolen base, finding a way to impact the game even in a tightly contested matchup.

Buckeye’s clean defense played an important role, too. The Bucks did not commit an error, a sharp contrast in a game where Notre Dame was charged with three. Notre Dame starter K. Sensel was strong as well, striking out nine over 6.0 innings while allowing just one hit and two runs, both unearned.
