Buckeye tops Brecksville 8-4, improves to 20-5
Buckeye used a five-run bottom of the fifth inning to break open a tight game and beat Brecksville-Broadview Heights 8-4 on Saturday in Medina, improving the Bucks to 20-5 on the season.
The decisive stretch came after Buckeye had built an early 3-0 lead, then saw Brecksville-Broadview Heights work back into the game. In the fifth, Eleanor Shaw doubled to center field and Kelsey Morano followed with a single down the left-field line, with each hit driving in two runs as the Bucks surged back in front. That inning gave Buckeye the separation it needed and turned the momentum for good.
Buckeye wasted little time getting started. In the bottom of the first, Faith Shaw singled up the middle to bring home a run, and Ava Piovarchy added a double to left field that scored another for a 2-0 advantage. The Bucks added on again in the third when Piovarchy doubled to center field, pushing the lead to 3-0.
At the plate, Buckeye finished with 12 hits and consistent production throughout the lineup. Faith Shaw led the way by going 3-for-4 and also drove in three runs from the middle of the order. Morano and Piovarchy each had multiple hits, and Sarah Michaels added pressure on the bases with two stolen bases. As a team, Buckeye stole five bases and repeatedly turned singles and doubles into scoring chances.
Buckeye also got contributions from both pitchers. Lilly Young (16-2) started and worked four innings, allowing one run on two hits while striking out three and walking two. Ava Piovarchy earned the win in relief, throwing two and one-third innings and allowing three runs on six hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Brecksville-Broadview Heights got two hits apiece from Dasenbrook and La, while La drove in two runs.
Cozza took the loss for Brecksville-Broadview Heights after allowing seven runs on 12 hits over five innings. For Buckeye, the result added another win to an already strong season, and the Bucks will try to carry that momentum into Tuesday's District Semi Final matchup against Padua Franciscan.
