Young’s 12-strikeout shutout leads Buckeye past Saint Joseph Academy, 7-0
Buckeye rode another dominant outing from Lilly Young and a decisive six-inning surge to a 7-0 win over Saint Joseph Academy on Monday at Victory Sports Park. The right-hander struck out 12, allowed just two hits and kept the Bucks in control throughout as Buckeye backed her with 11 hits, aggressive baserunning and error-free defense.
The Bucks took the lead in the first inning when Ava Piovarchy delivered an RBI single to make it 1-0. Buckeye added another run in the third on a wild pitch, then broke the game open with four runs in the sixth. Cassie Minarchick singled in a run during the rally, and McKenzie Cenname followed with a three-run double that gave Buckeye plenty of breathing room and effectively put the game away.
Young was the centerpiece again in the circle. She worked all seven innings, walked three and never let Saint Joseph Academy mount sustained pressure. The shutout extended Young’s scoreless innings streak to 48 and marked her eighth consecutive shutout, another milestone in a run that has anchored Buckeye’s strong stretch this season.
Several Bucks helped drive the offense. Minarchick finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs, while Cenname, hitting from the No. 9 spot, went 1-for-4 and drove in three. Piovarchy went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run, Faith Shaw was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, and Sarah Michaels added a 2-for-4 day with two runs and three stolen bases.
Buckeye was just as sharp on the bases and in the field. The Bucks stole seven bases, with Michaels leading the way, and consistently turned singles into scoring threats. Defensively, Buckeye did not commit an error, giving Young steady support behind her and preventing Saint Joseph Academy from finding an opening back into the game.
With the shutout win, Buckeye adds another complete performance to its season resume, using timely hitting and overpowering pitching to control the matchup from the first inning on. The Bucks are scheduled to travel to Valley Forge for their next game Thursday.
