Buckeye rode a dominant performance from Lilly Young and a pair of late defensive gems to a 4-0 win over Rocky River on Monday at Buckeye Senior High School to reclaim 1st place in the CWC. Young struck out 17, allowed just two infield hits and did not issue a walk in a complete-game shutout, while the Bucks backed her with timely hitting and an error-free effort in the field.

The decisive late moment came in the top of the seventh, when Rocky River tried to build momentum with a single to center. Faith Shaw cut that off by throwing out a runner attempting to advance from second to third, ending the threat and preserving Buckeye's control of the game. It was the kind of clean defensive play that matched the Bucks' work all afternoon, as Buckeye finished without an error. Eleanor Shaw handled a team-high 18 chances in the field.

Buckeye took the lead in the bottom of the first. After two early singles put pressure on Rocky River, Sarah Michaels delivered a run-scoring single to open the scoring. The Bucks added on in the third inning when Eleanor Shaw doubled to center field to bring home a run, then Ava Piovarchy followed with a well-executed sacrifice squeeze bunt that scored Makayla McNamee from third and stretched the lead to 3-0.

Piovarchy also finished with an RBI, and Buckeye added its fourth run later to give Young more than enough support. Faith Shaw, Eleanor Shaw and Maddie Wilhelm each collected two hits for the Bucks. Faith Shaw went 2 for 3 with a triple, Eleanor Shaw finished 2 for 3 with a double, and Wilhelm was 2 for 3 as Buckeye consistently put pressure on Rocky River's defense. Juliana Melillo added two stolen bases to help create traffic on the bases.

Young worked through all seven innings, missing bats throughout the game and never allowing Rocky River to settle in at the plate. By the time Buckeye closed out the seventh, the Bucks had paired one of their sharpest pitching efforts of the season with the situational execution that produced runs early and the defensive finish that sealed the shutout.
